Caylem vs supastarter for South African teams
Both Caylem and supastarter offer a Polar integration. For South African builders, the stronger comparison is the billing workflow, database model and delivery rights you need. Caylem adds a local ZAR source offer. supastarter offers a broader documented SaaS feature set.

Start with the application your team must deliver
supastarter’s Next.js kit includes organisations, authentication and subscription management. It documents a SQL data layer and multiple payment providers. It separates the public marketing application from protected product features.
Caylem is the application behind this storefront. Its source release includes two market frontends, one Convex backend and a separate prototype. Clerk handles identity, and Polar supports the implemented source purchases. You buy the selected release at the catalog’s configured rand price.

The same provider does not mean the same product flow
Polar lists South Africa as a payout country, subject to seller review. That eligibility is relevant to either product’s integration. It is not an exclusive reason to choose Caylem, and it does not approve your business automatically.
Trace what your customer receives after payment. Caylem already grants access to a source release and exposes it in a library. A subscription application needs ongoing access and renewal rules. A local service business may need a different gateway entirely. Choose the flow before choosing the logo.
Build a rand budget for the whole project
The Caylem catalog shows the source release’s ZAR price without substituting a USD price. That makes the purchase amount explicit. It does not fix the cost of hosting, email, identity, database usage or an external coding assistant.
Compare supastarter’s current plan for the number of developers and the kind of project you will deliver. Then estimate missing features and recurring services for both choices. A client subscription portal and a one-time download store can have very different implementation costs even when both show a checkout button.
Choose a baseline your team can repeat
For a SQL-oriented agency, supastarter’s setup and upstream-update workflow can align with existing engineering practices. Evaluate how a typical schema change and a vendor update would pass through your team’s review process.
For a team choosing Convex, Caylem supplies a working reference plus shared pages, setup instructions and a release workflow. Keep a separate repository and appropriate service separation for each independent client. MIT permits source reuse with notices, but updates and deployment remain work your team owns.
Which should you choose?
Choose Caylem if…
- You want a selected source release priced in rand.
- The source-purchase journey and Convex architecture match the brief.
- Your team values MIT reuse and will implement any additional product rules.
Choose supastarter if…
- You need its documented subscriptions and organisations early.
- Your team wants SQL and the supported data tooling.
- Its provider choices and applicable team or agency plan fit your work.
Before you decide
Does supastarter already support Polar?
Yes. Its public Next.js payment documentation lists Polar. Our comparison does not claim that a South African builder must use Caylem to evaluate that provider.
Can I use the included checkout for agency service invoices?
Do not assume that. Caylem’s Polar flow is for source purchases, and the provider’s product rules matter. Service invoicing, physical goods and local payment requirements need an appropriate route of their own.
Does either source kit guarantee provider approval?
No. Buying code and passing a payment provider’s review are separate steps. Validate the business and intended product before committing to the integration.
Inspect the application you would build on
Check the selected release and its current ZAR price before purchase. You receive the source under MIT. Hosting, service approval, custom development and maintenance are separate. Your source purchase does not approve your future business to accept payments.
